The Ramayana Ballet of Prambanan is a performance that combines dance and drama without dialogue, based on the Ramayana story, and is staged near the Prambanan Temple on the island of Java, Indonesia. It has been the most consistent performer of the Ramayana Ballet since 1961.
The Ramayana story, derived from the Hindu epic and adapted to Javanese culture, makes the Ramayana Ballet a unique dance performance. More than 200 professional dancers and local musicians participate in the performance, which takes place on an open-air stage with the Prambanan Temple as the backdrop. The story of the Ramayana is also depicted in the reliefs on the Shiva Temple.
The Ramayana tells the journey of Rama in rescuing his wife, Sita (locally known as Sinta), who is abducted by the king of Alengka, Ravana. The Ramayana Ballet of Prambanan is usually held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, with performances on the open stage during the dry season, and in the indoor Trimurti Stage during other times of the year.
